Chests, Keys and Chest rarity

Open Chests to unlock Troops and other Rewards. There are 6 types of Chests in Gems of War

Chests are the primary source of Troops or cards in Gems of War. Each Chest listed in this article is of a different 'rarity' or value, listed from lowest to highest. 

Open Chests

To see the Chest menu and which Keys you have select 'Chests' from the bottom of the World Map. Each Chest is unlocked with a Key which can give a number of rewards. The rarity of the chest determines the overall chance of earning better rewards. For example, Glory keys have a small chance to earn Mythic Troops but VIP Keys have a much higher chance for Mythic Troops.

As Gems of War is a game based on card collection, rewards from the Chests are randomised and there is no guarantee that a specific Troop can be earned. This also helps keep the game on an even playing field amongst everyone.

NOTE: Unfortunately, we are unable to disclose the Chest drop-rates or chances in this article.

Types of Chests

Gold Chests

Gold Chests are unlocked using Gold Keys which are the easiest to find, or by using Gold. They contain Common & Rare Troops, Minor & Major Traitstones, Gold, Souls, Glory and Gems.

Find Gold Keys by purchasing them with Gold (1 Chest costs 300 Gold), collecting Tribute, earning battle rewards, completing Daily Tasks, completing Guild Tasks and playing Treasure Hunt.

Glory Chests

Glory Chests are the bread-and-butter of chests and are unlocked using Glory Keys or Glory. The Keys are still fairly easy to acquire and these Chests offer the widest range of Rewards - any troops Rare or higher can be found, all the way up to Mythic troops, Major Traitstones or higher rarity Traitstones, as well as Gold, Souls, Glory and Gems.

You can find Glory Keys: by purchasing them with Glory (1 Chest costs 20 Glory), winning PVP defense battles, achieving PVP Tiers, completing Daily Tasks, completing Guild Tasks, playing Treasure Hunt and as Daily Login Rewards from the Calendar.

Gem Chests

Gem Chests are some of the highest rarity of Chests, they're unlocked with Gem Keys or Gems. They contain only Ultra-Rare or higher rarity Troops, the lowest rarity Traitstones in the Chest are Runic Traitstones and you can also find Ingots. There is a 4x higher chance to find Legendary Troops in Gem Chests compared to Glory Chests and a 10x higher chance to find Mythic Troops.

You can find Gem Keys by purchasing them with Gems (1 Chest costs 10 Gems), completing Guild Tasks, playing Treasure Hunt, playing the Adventure Board and as Daily Login Rewards from the Calendar.

Event Chests

Event Chests are unlocked with Event Keys or Gems and they contain Runic Traitstones or higher rarity Traitstones, and the only Troops in these Chests are the ones from the current Weekly Event. For example: if the event is in Broken Spire, the troops in Event Chests will only be from Broken Spire.

For this reason, Event Chests are a great way to find a specific Mythic or Legendary Troop you may be missing from your collection.

You can find Event Keys: by purchasing them with Gems (1 Chest costs 15 Gems), completing Guild Tasks, playing the Adventure Board and weekly Guild Event Reward stages, playing Treasure Hunt, and as Daily Login Rewards from the Calendar.

Guild Chests

Guild Chests are unlocked with Guild Keys or Guild Seals and the contents are directly affected by your Guild participation and how active your Guildmates are! The more activities you and your Guildmates complete the better the rewards the Guild Chests contain. This article explains how Guild Chests work in depth.

You can find Guild Keys by purchasing them with Guild Seals (1 Chest costs 20 Seals), by purchasing them as a gift for your Guild or by receiving them from a Guildmate.

VIP Chests

VIP Chests are special Chests that are usually only available to players who have made real money purchases in the Shop. They are unlocked with VIP Keys or Gems. They only have contents of Epic quality or higher, with the added bonus that players will have a chance to earn Traitstones, as VIP Chests will have a 30% chance per key to earn 2 bonus Arcane or Celestial Traitstones.

Each VIP Chest comes with 2,000 Gold and ONE of the following:

• A Legendary or Mythic Troop
• 2 Epic Troops

You can find VIP Keys by purchasing them in the Shop if you are of VIP Level 5 or more, after which you can purchase VIP Keys for Gems (1 Chest costs 50 Gems). 

TIP: Although you need to be VIP 5 to access the VIP Chests normally (and open them with Gems), if you have earned VIP Keys you can still spend them to unlock the Chests - for example, with the Mini-VIP Pack in the store.

Shiny Chests

Shiny Chests are unlocked with Shiny Keys or converting Shiny Dust. The Keys are earned from Events or Event offers. Shiny Chests contain 1-3 Shiny tokens that are used to unlock Troop lore and upgrade certain troops to their Shiny version.

Once you have upgraded all Shiny troops to Shiny Level 3, then you will only receive Shiny Dust until new Shiny Troops are released.

Burning Chests

Burning Chest are found in the PvP Game Mode and are unlocked using Burning Marks.Burning Chests contain Immortal Souls, Gold and Silver Marks, and Icons.

Each Burning Chest will give ONE of the following:

• 10 – 50 Immortal Souls for a random Immortal
• 20 Gold Marks or 50 Silver Marks
• 1 Bronze, Silver or Gold Icon

You can earn Burning Marks in from the PvP Season Pass rewards track, completing PvP Season Goals and purchasing them directly from the PvP Shop (this will have weekly purchase limits).

Earning rare Troops from Chests

Many common, rare, ultra-rare & epic cards are very strong in Gems of War and with the right team combination can even outperform teams comprised of 4 base rarity Mythic Troops. The ascension system will allow you to use duplicates to power up your copy of that card!

Like all collectable card games, from Magic The Gathering to Hearthstone, there is a chance to get lucky when getting new cards and a chance to get unlucky. While it might be normal to pull say 1 in 50 Legendary cards from Gem Keys, sometimes you will get 4, but other times you might get zero.

Earning Mythic Troops in chests

Luck may miss you and you won't receive a mythic from a chest, but they are available. You can also try using the Soulforge and Dungeons to earn Jewels and Traitstones to craft mythic or legendary troops.

Tips

• Chests that are purchasable with Gems (Gem, Event and VIP Chests) are offered at a discount of 5% or 10% if opened 10 or 50 at a time, respectively.
