The Underworld update released in Gems of War in September 2018, as update Version 4.0. This update added an entirely new expansion to the existing Map of Krystara by allowing you to explore beneath the world with additional game modes, features, resources, and Troops.
The new game features in the Underworld update include:
- Sin of Maraj Kingdom and Questline (used to unlock The Underworld)
- The Underworld Map
- Factions and their Troops, Quests, and Banners
- Faction Events
- Chaos Portals
- Chaos Shards (used to open Chaos Portals)
- Treasure and Treasure Hoards
- Faction Renown
These features are listed in the logical order of using and unlocking the content as a new player to the Underworld.
Unlocking The Underworld
Complete the Sin of Maraj questline to unlock access to the Underworld.
Using the Underworld
The user interface and main menus in the Underworld are mostly the same as in Krystara, however, there is one main new button; shown in the center of the HUD (display) toolbar. Select this is used to collect Tribute from Kingdoms in Krystara. Once collected, select it again to be transported to the Underworld.
How is the Underworld different from Krystara?
Overall, the Underworld does not function in the same way as Krystara. The content, activities, and tasks of the Underworld are vastly different, but some of the key gameplay mechanics are the same. Both Krystara and the Underworld provide access to the same Troops, however, Krystaran Troops cannot be unlocked in the Underworld and vice-versa.
Battles and Rewards
Standard Battle Rewards such as Gold and Souls are given for completing Battles in Quests and Delves. The Rewards will separate in the Rewards list after a battle is completed however they are added to the same resource: For example, Gold and Delve Gold and the same.
This was added to differentiate between the Gold awarded from the Battle plus the Gold given for the Delve as well.

Some large Stone Blocks will appear on the board in predefined positions. Each Faction's game mode has a different starting position of Blocks, but the starting position will remain the same if the game mode is repeated. Stone Blocks do not fall onto the Board like Gems or Skulls and cannot be matched or moved, however, they can be exploded.
Spells and Stone Blocks
Generally, most Spells that do not target specific Mana or Gem colors can take Stone Blocks away from the board.
Most Troops with Spells that Explode the board in a general area or who target a specific Mana color will also Explode Stone Blocks nearby. However, Ancient Golem is an example of a Troop that can specifically target Stone Blocks to Explode.
Example: Bombot, "Explode 2 random Gems.". Or, Abynissia's "Explode all Gems of a chosen Color." - You can use this spell to destroy blocks by selecting a color of a gem that is next to a block.
Most Troops that Destroy Gems in a general area will also Destroy Stone Blocks.
Example: Armored Board, "Destroy a row.", or Autumnal Imp, "Destroy 10 random Gems."
Spells that remove Gems in a general or random area can remove blocks.
Example: Abhorath's "Remove all gems".
